PUBLIC FUNDING
FOR ARTY FARTY

STRIKING A BALANCE BETWEEN INDEPENDENCE AND THE PUBLIC INTEREST

I

n 2019, public funds accounted for under 20% of Arty Farty’s overall financing and for slightly over 10% of that of its ecosystem.

The COVID crisis had a severe impact on the activities of Arty Farty and its ecosystem (including the cancellation of the Nuits Sonores festival in 2020, venue closures, the collapse of venue privatisations and private partnerships, etc.).

Against that backdrop, the proportion of public funding went up in 2020 and 2021, owing to reduced activity levels, the common-law funding offered to companies and the emergency funds allocated to the cultural sector. During this period of crisis, the share of public funding surpassed 50% for Arty Farty and 30% for the ecosystem as a whole.

We expect the share of public funding to have fallen in 2022; it is projected to stand at 40% for Arty Farty and 25% for the overall ecosystem. Our long-term ambition is to achieve a stable level of public funding at 25–30% for Arty Farty and 20% for the ecosystem.

As far as our ecosystem and its governance is concerned, our goal is to settle at a level of public funding that serves as a fair reflection of our public-interest commitments and activities, without putting at risk the structure's desire to remain independent from its private and public partners.
